Soft Spots in a Hard World: Frank Watkinson

Let me share with you a discovery I made this week: Frank Watkinson’s YouTube Channel1.

His username: “@virtualgrandad”, is a pretty good introduction.

Thursday night, the last week of the semester, we needed some relief so I got on YouTube to find a silly cover of a popular song to take the edge off. That didn’t last long because the algorithm recommended this:

Emily has a soft spot for old people and I love me a good cover. Neither one of us were disappointed. Now we have a “Virtual Grandad” to play us a song anytime we want some feels. I haven’t heard them all but some of my favorites are:

Linger (cover of a Cranberries song)

Iris (a goo-goo dolls cover)

Wake me up When September Ends (a Green Day Cover)

But if you’re not into 90’s alternative there’s more

He does everything, from Ozzy Osbourne, to Oasis, Pink Floyd, to PINK!, John Lennon to John Mayer, Billie Eilish, to Bob Dylan.

If you’ve ever listened to the Johnny Cash “American” albums2 the vibes are the same.

All the weighty emotion of a long life paired with the innocence of old age.

The best ones will jerk tears and put a smile on your face.

Go give it a look, there’s probably something there for you.

🙂

1Note: He’s also on Spotify.

2Towards the end of his life Johnny Cash released four or five albums in a series (American I, American II, American III… etc.) featuring several of the best covers in existence including Hurt (Nine-inch Nails), I Won’t Back Down (Tom Petty), and One (U2)
